Keeping dogs in a home, even when life falls apart.
Our Mission
No dog should lose their home because life got hard. Second Leash Foundation steps in before the surrender happens — with emergency vet care, food, boarding, and a Senior Guardian Program for elderly owners. We are the call families make when they have nowhere else to turn.
How We Help
Every dog on our waitlist has a name. Every one of them has a person who loves them, someone who did not choose hardship, who did not stop caring, who simply ran out of options.
Second Leash Foundation steps in before a dog ever reaches a shelter door. We pay veterinarians directly for emergency care. We keep dogs fed when a family's food assistance runs out. We provide safe temporary boarding when housing falls through. And through our Senior Guardian Program, we make sure an elderly owner's dog, often their only daily companion, never gets left behind.
For dogs who have already entered the shelter system, we fund adoption assistance so they find their way home to someone who will love them for life.
Every program we run has one goal: no dog loses their home because life fell apart.
We serve all U.S. states for vet, food, adoption, and senior assistance. Short-term boarding is available in DFW only on a case-by-case basis. Typical review: 24–72 hours (urgent vet cases faster).
Get Support
Your dog doesn't know there's a crisis. All they know is they need you — and you're trying.
Second Leash Foundation exists for exactly this moment. No judgment. No shame. Just real help, quickly, for the dog who is counting on you.
We provide emergency support to keep your dog safe, fed, and healthy while you get back on your feet. If any of the following apply to your situation, we want to hear from you:
We support individuals and families experiencing:
Job loss or reduced income
Eviction, housing instability, or forced relocation
Medical emergencies or hospitalization
Domestic violence or crisis situations
Loss of food assistance
Natural disasters or emergency displacement
Any temporary hardship impacting pet care.
What we cover:
Emergency pet food — keeping your dog fed while you stabilize
Urgent veterinary care — paid directly to the veterinarian, never out of your pocket
Temporary crisis boarding — a safe place for your dog when you need one
Senior Guardian Program — care and support for elderly owners and their dogs
Adoption assistance — for families ready to give a shelter dog a home
If you’re unsure whether you qualify, you can still apply. We review each case with compassion.
