Adoption Fee Assistance™

The fee should never be the reason a dog stays in a shelter.

Every year, adoptable dogs sit in shelters longer than they should, not because no one wants them, but because the adoption fee is one bill too many for a family already stretched thin..

Second Leash Foundation pays adoption fees directly to shelters and rescue organizations on behalf of adopters who face financial barriers. The dog goes home. The shelter is paid in full. The family keeps what little they have left.

How It Works

  • A qualifying adopter identifies a dog at a municipal shelter or 501(c)(3) rescue.

  • They submit an application to Second Leash Foundation.

  • We review the case — typically within 24 to 72 hours.

  • If approved, we pay the adoption fee directly to the shelter or rescue. Funds never go to the adopter.

  • The dog goes home.

Who Can Apply

  • Individuals or families adopting from a municipal shelter or 501(c)(3) rescue

  • Adopters facing financial hardship, recent or ongoing

  • First-time adopters who need help getting started

  • Anyone adopting a senior dog or a hard-to-place dog (priority consideration)

You do not need to be low income to apply, you simply need to be committed to providing a safe, loving home.

What This Program Covers

The Adoption Fee Assistance™ program is available to qualifying adopters across all 50 states. We pay the adoption fee directly, not a portion, not a reimbursement, the full fee.

Funds are paid directly to the shelter or rescue. Never to the adopter.

Why this Matters

Adoption fees exist for a reasonthey help shelters cover spay/neuter, vaccinations, and the cost of care while a dog waits. We do not want shelters to lower or waive fees. We want adopters who would otherwise walk away to be able to walk out with a dog instead.

Every fee we cover is one more dog in a home, one more kennel opened up, and one more family that did not have to choose between a dog they love and a bill they cannot pay.
